Lewis W. Hathaway Jr. Was U.S. Army Veteran

Lewis W. Hathaway Jr. died peacefully on Oct. 24 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Lewis was born in Oak Bluffs on March 28, 1937, the son of Anna Burgess Hathaway and Lewis W. Hathaway Sr. of Edgartown. He was a graduate of Edgartown High School and went on to finish his studies at Katama University.

Inducted into the Army on Dec. 4, 1959, he was stationed in Berlin during the Berlin Crisis. After serving his time as a spook for Uncle Sam, he made his triumphant return to the Vineyard where he quickly resumed fishing and had a brief but brilliant Hollywood career as an extra in Jaws.

He was a member of the American Legion and Martha's Vineyard Surfcasters, and was an all-around good guy.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Judith (Winterbottom) Hathaway, and children, Karen Hathaway of Sandwich, Molly (Hathaway) Hargy and her husband, Christopher, of Edgartown, and Wendy Hathaway of Edgartown; three brothers, Peter and John Hathaway of Edgartown and Gary Hathaway of Maine; and two beautiful granddaughters, April Lee and Samantha Joy Hargy of Edgartown.

A memorial was held on Monday, Oct. 27, at St. Andrew's Church in Edgartown with the Rev. Robert Edmunds officiating. Interment will be private in the family lot at the Oak Grove Cemetery with full military honors offered by the veterans of Martha's Vineyard.
