Glenda Campbell Was Former Island Resident

Glenda Campbell, beloved wife of Dr. Jack B. Campbell, both of Fairhope, Ala., died Friday, May 28 at Providence Hospital in Mobile following extensive heart surgery. She was 53.

Mrs. Campbell was born in Jackson, Miss., on June 9, 1950, the daughter of Percy Estes and Ruby Burden Estes. She grew up in Jackson, attended Jackson public schools, Mississippi College and Millsaps College. On May 22, 1980, she and Dr. Campbell were married by the Rev. John Schule in the Federated Church on the Island of Martha's Vineyard. Following Dr. Campbell's retirement, they lived year-round on the Island. While on the Vineyard, she became active in community affairs, serving on the Edgartown Historic District Commission and the Edgartown Beautification Committee. She was a member of the Federated Church of Edgartown.

As a partner in Traditions, a popular antiques and fine gifts shop, she was widely known for her innovative and award-winning window displays. Even though her love of the Island and its ways was readily apparent (she was lovingly referred to by many of her close friends as Magnolia Blossom), after many years of Island life, she longed to return to her beloved Southland. Finally, in 2001, she and her husband chose Fairhope and bought a house near the Grand Hotel. As usual, she restored, remodeled and redecorated her new home, dubbing it Final Resting Place and resumed her much-welcomed Southern way of life.

Mrs. Campbell's joys in life were her husband, her family, her home, her gardens and freely sharing her natural talent for design. Tragically, after only a short time in her new home, chronic heart disease overtook her in spite of her fierce struggle for life. She will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to be touched by her grace and friendship, for her classic beauty, her fierce love of family and friends and her unerring eye for beauty in both people and things.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Jack B. Campbell, M.D.; her stepson, J. Benjamin Campbell, C.R.N.A., of Hot Springs, Ark.; a sister, Sue Hancock; brothers, David and Larry Estes, all of Clinton, Miss.; a granddaughter, Ashley Campbell; grandson, Joseph Campbell, as well as a nephew, Michael, and nieces, Rebecca, Angela, Melissa and Christi.

Arrangements were made by Fairhope Funeral Home where private services were held on May 30. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Federated Church in Edgartown. Burial will be in the Memorial Garden adjacent to the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust, P. O. Box 5277, Edgartown, MA 02539.
