John S. Rogers

John S. Rogers of Oak Bluffs died Sunday, August 29, at Martha's Vineyard Hospital. He was 74.

Mr. Rogers was a well-known Island figure, working for more than 40 years as a projectionist at Island movie theatres. A Chicago native and veteran of the Korean war, he started working for the Hall family in their Vineyard theatres in 1960.

Mr. Rogers was proud of his work, and liked to say that the less a moviegoer knows about the projectionist, the better. He told the Gazette in a 2000 interview: "People pay their money and they're entitled to a good show. I'll give them the best show I can."

He was the husband of Phyllis (Gonsalves) Rogers. Mr. Rogers was the father of John S. Rogers, Dale Rogers, Stephanie White and Corrine Rogers. He was the brother of Barbara Woodhouse. He was the father of the late Yvette Rogers and brother of the late Louis Rogers.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, in Trinity United Methodist Church on the Camp Ground. A full obituary will appear in a future edition. Arrangements are by the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs. Visit www.ccgfuneralhome.com for online guest book and information.
