Arthur T. Hermenau, 74, Enjoyed Outdoor Activities

Arthur T. Hermenau of Carver, formerly a longtime Pembroke resident, died Oct. 5 at Boston Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was 74.

Mr. Hermenau was the husband of Shirley (Cummings) Hermenau.

Born May 25, 1930, in Bayonne, N.J., a son of Arthur E. and Louise E. (Pinkham) Hermenau, he grew up and was educated on the Vineyard.

Mr. Hermenau entered the U.S. Army in 1949 and served during the Korean War; he received the Korean Service Medal with five bronze service stars.

After the war, he was employed with the highway division of the Massachusetts Department of Public Works. He served as Pembroke's highway surveyor from 1977 until he retired in 1992 and was a member of the Plymouth County Highway Association.

He enjoyed the outdoors, flowers and gardening.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Steven M. Hermenau of Lakeville, Ronald S. Hermenau of San Francisco, Calif., Gary A. Hermenau of Plymouth, Lori A. Cahill of Pembroke and Lisa M. Hedding of Middleboro; two brothers, Carl Hermenau of Martha's Vineyard and William Hermenau of Taunton; a sister, Marie Hadfield of Westport; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also a brother of the late Walter Hermenau and Louise Allingham.

Interment was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
