Leo G. Bayer, Playwright, Summered on Vineyard

Leo G. Bayer, Esquire, playwright and novelist, of Crescent street, Duxbury, died Dec. 28 at his residence, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 96.

Mr. Bayer was the husband of Elizabeth (Brown) Bayer.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Sept. 6, 1908, he was a son of the late William S. and Gertrude L. (Grossberg) Bayer.

Raised and educated in Ohio, Mr. Bayer resided in Cleveland for 58 years prior to moving to Duxbury in 1967. Mr. Bayer summered in West Tisbury starting in 1937, and became a West Tisbury resident in 1955.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served from 1943 to 1950 during the World War II era, and achieved the rank of lieutenant.

Mr. Bayer was a member of the Dramatists Guild in New York city. An attorney, he was in practice in Cleveland for 38 years.

He will be lovingly remembered as a loving husband and father of six children.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, William Bayer of San Francisco and Nick Bayer of West Tisbury; four daughters, Ann Bayer of New York city, Jerry Bayer of Andover, Sarah Bayer of Cambridge and Amy Bayer of the Roslindale section of Boston; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Devora Bayer and Virginia Jaffee.

At Mr. Bayer's request, funeral services and interment will be private. Visitation has been respectfully omitted.
