Gladys Schoeneberg Was Farmers' Market Regular

Gladys Mae Grant Schoeneberg of Laughlin, Nev. and summer resident of Edgartown died Jan. 20 at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center in Bullhead City, Ariz.

She was the widow of Fred Schoeneberg and the daughter of Lyman and Achsalt (Perry) Grant. She was born in Yarmouthport, Nova Scotia on June 12, 1912, and moved with her parents to Edgartown in 1926 by the persuasion of her mother's sister, who lived on the Island already.

When she married Fred, they lived in Barnegat, N.J. until Fred retired and then moved to Southern California to live in Mission Viejo. After the death of her husband, she bought her summer residence on Tower Lane which she shared with her daughter.

Gladys was well known for her homemade jellies and jams and was a mainstay for more than a decade at the farmers' market in West Tisbury, dressing in her colorful apron and broad-brimmed hat.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Schoeneberg of Laughlin, Nev. and by her various nieces and nephews including Dean Grant of Edgartown, Barry Duncan and Douglas Duncan both of Brookfield, Wisc., and Ellen Kitzman of New Berlin, Wisc. She was predeceased by her brothers, Ralph Grant, Mansfield Grant and Kenneth Grant -- all from the Grant Bros. Construction fame of Island years gone by -- and her sister, Ruth Duncan.

Her funeral service was held Wednesday in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs and was officiated by the Rev. Jerry Fritz. Donations may be made to the Federated Church, Summer street, Edgartown, MA 02539.
