Helen Crooks Gibbons, 93, Was Summer Visitor

Helen Crooks Gibbons, born August 12, 1911 to Amos and Grace Crooks in Winthrop, died May 3 in Jacksonville, Fla. She was 93 years old.

As a young girl, Helen summered at Malone, N.Y. She loved to swim and was featured in the Winthrop newspaper when she first learned to swim at one year old. Helen, Bill and the children lived on the Vineyard for 10 years and then returned every summer thereafter. She spent a week there last summer to celebrate her 93rd birthday.

Helen is a graduate of Winthrop High School and the University of New Hampshire, class of 1933, with a bachelor's degree.

She was an active member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority and received her 75th year anniversary pin on April 23. Helen was both an active member of the DAR and of the Anzio Retired Officer Association.

Helen was predeceased by her husband of 48 years in 1985, Col. William E. Gibbons. She was also predeceased by a sister, Polly Sadler. Survivors include a sister, Betty Morris of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Patsy Worthington of Ponte Vedra, Betty (Robert) Harrel of Darien, Conn., and Billie Hancock of Ponte Vedra and Chilmark; one son, Col. Peter W. (Sharon) Gibbons of Fairfax, Va.; 10 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Thursday, May 12 at the Palm Valley Baptist Church were she was a member. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in her honor to Palm Valley Baptist Church 4890 Palm Valley Road, Ponte Vedra, FL 32082.
