Priscilla M. (Peggy) Carroll, 56, of Vineyard Haven died peacefully at her home on May 5 after nine years of a courageous battle with cancer. Her loving family surrounded her at the time of her death. 

Peggy was born in Oak Bluffs on Jan. 8, 1949 and was the daughter of Esther Cummens of Naples, Fla. and the late W. Chester Cummens. Peggy was a graduate of the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School and of Bryant and Stratton College in Boston. Peggy was employed by Carroll's Moving and Storage in Vineyard Haven and was a very instrumental part of the office management

She was fond of horseback riding, enjoyed playing and watching tennis, traveling in the tractor-trailer with her husband, Leigh, to different parts of the country and spending winter vacations in Florida. While her children were growing up, she always remained involved with their many activities and volunteered for different fund-raising events.

Besides her mother Peggy leaves her husband of 36 years, Leigh C. Carroll Sr. of Vineyard Haven, her children; Greg Carroll of Edgartown, Leigh Carroll Jr. of Oak Bluffs, Holly (Carroll) Bruguiere of Edgartown and Megan Carroll of Vineyard Haven, three stepsons, Randy Carroll of Newton, Scott Carroll of Long Branch, N.J. and Marc Street of Wellington, Fla. and Oak Bluffs, a sister, Brenda (Cummens) Johnson of Naples, Fla., a brother, Chuck Cummens of Vineyard Haven, four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren, as well a several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury at 1 p.m. Donations may be made in her memory to the Martha's Vineyard Cancer Support Group, P.O. Box 2214, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568 or to Hospice of Martha's Vineyard, P.O. Box 2549, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home.
