Morgan Scott Brown Was Teacher and Family Man

Morgan Scott Brown of Louisville, Ky., and longtime summer resident of Chappaquiddick and Edgartown, died late Sunday, June 19, following a very courageous struggle with prostate cancer. He was 64.

Mr. Brown was born Jan. 22, 1941, in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. A 1958 graduate of Deerfield Academy and graduate of Yale and Wesleyan universities, he spent 35 years teaching mathematics in various independent schools across the country, most recently at Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, Me., where he was chairman of the math department.

Mr. Brown first visited the Vineyard in 1948, and spent time there nearly every summer during his life. His late parents, Leland Scott and Mary Murray Brown, were longtime summer residents of Chappaquiddick. He had been greatly looking forward to two weeks on the Vineyard with his family in early July. He was a longtime member of the Edgartown Yacht Club, where he also served as sailing master for the junior sailing program for several summers, raised funds to help start the Optimist pram fleet and was a member of the race committee when he was in residence on the Vineyard.

Mr. Brown was known for his kindness and generosity of spirit, his love of young people and teaching mathematics, and his deep love and devotion to his family.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Suzanne R. Brown, and was beloved Poppa to John R. Bradbury Jr. of Greenwich, Conn., and Sarah B. Robbins of Louisville, Ky. He is also survived by one sister, Janet Brown Jussel, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., and four grandchildren, Henry Wyatt Robbins and William Chandler Robbins of Louisville, Ky., and John R. Bradbury 3rd and Lily Smith Bradbury of Greenwich, Conn.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 23, at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church in Louisville with interment at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Bedford, N.Y. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews in Edgartown in early July.
