Leigh C. Carroll Jr., 34, Was Vineyard Native

Leigh C. Carroll Jr. of Oak Bluffs died unexpectedly at the age of 34 on Tuesday, July 19. An investigation is taking place to determine the cause of death.

Leigh was born on Dec. 16, 1970 in Oak Bluffs to Peggy and Leigh Carroll Sr. of Vineyard Haven. His mother Peggy, who died on May 5, predeceases him.  

Leigh grew up on the Vineyard and was involved with the youth hockey, baseball and soccer programs. He excelled as an athlete and always enjoyed being part of the team. As a star hockey player he wanted to advance his skills in the game and attended Lawrence Academy in Groton. After graduating from Lawrence Academy in 1990 he attended Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y. He then spent time exploring different parts of the country before returning back to his home in Vineyard Haven. Leigh was employed by Carroll's Moving and Storage in Vineyard Haven and will be greatly missed by those he saw from day to day.

Besides his father, he leaves his maternal grandmother, Esther Cummens of Naples, Fla.; his brothers Greg Carroll of Edgartown, Scott Carroll of Long Branch, N.J. and Marc Street of Oak Bluffs and Wellington, Fla.; his sisters, Holly (Carroll) Bruguiere of Edgartown and Megan Carroll of Vineyard Haven; four nephews, four nieces, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Leigh was also predeceased by his brother, Randy Carroll of Newton Upper Falls; his maternal grandfather, W. Chester Cummens of Naples, and his paternal grandparents, William and Alexandra Carroll of Vineyard Haven.

A funeral mass was held on Monday, July 25 in St. Augustine's Church. Donations may be made in his memory to the Fellowship Health Resources, Inc., P.O. Box 1051, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557.
