Arthur W. Danielson, known on the Island as Dan, died Jan. 20 in the Jupiter, Fla. home that he shared with his wife, Ora Danielson. He was 98 years old.

Dan was a school superintendent, builder and avid boater and fisherman who lived on Lagoon Pond in Oak Bluffs for over 40 years before moving south.

Dan’s first wife was Hope Flanders from Chilmark, whom he met at Bates College. They were divorced in 1968. Hope, 93, and Dan’s son, David Danielson, now live together in Northampton. He was also predeceased by his second wife, Harriet. Harriet’s children, Lynda Laky and Bruce Wayne, and his wife, Susan, kept a strong connection with Dan through the years. Ora’s daughter, Juanita Smithwick, cared for Dan after Ora’s death a year ago.

Dan touched the lives of many, including scores of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren from these three vibrant families. A simple memorial service in Florida in March is being planned.
