Joyce A. Bernard, 79, a former resident of Woodside Village in Oak Bluffs, died peacefully on Jan. 23 at the Falmouth Care Nursing Home in Falmouth, surrounded by her children.

Born on Sept. 27, 1932, in Attleboro to Joseph and Agnes (Juskiewicz) Sydeski, Joyce was predeceased by her only brother, Joseph Sydeski Jr.

Over the years Joyce has had many jobs, from working at Sears as the head booker, to caring for a couple in Edgartown whom she adored for many years. But most of all she was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to many.

She enjoyed all of her friends at Woodside Village and was always making new ones. She wrote the monthly newsletter and planned the weekly get-togethers with friends and birthday parties as well. She even would make sure to bake the cake or make cupcakes, which she loved to do. Holidays were a fun time for making candy apples and baking for her children and their friends, which many still talk about. At Halloween she loved seeing all the children in costumes.

Spring was always Joyce’s favorite time of the year when the flowers started to bloom and the weather was getting warm. It always brought a big smile to her face.

She is survived by her children, Kathleen Meyer and her husband Gregory of Sunapee, N.H., Mary Johnson and her husband Kenneth of Edgartown, Rick Bernard of Edgartown, Stephanie Boudreau and her husband Keith of Plymouth, and Bill Bernard and Jill Maiorana of Oak Bluffs and Falmouth.

She also leaves behind the greatest joys in her life — her grandchildren, Katie and Ashley Meyer, William and Michael Johnson and Travis, Alyssa, Anthony and Joseph Bernard. Joyce was predeceased by two grandchildren, Danielle Arsenault and Christopher Bernard.

A memorial service is being planned for this spring.
