Edward S. Shemit Jr, 69, of Oak Bluffs,. died on March 16, while surrounded by his family,.

Born in Meriden, Conn., he lived in Wallingford, Conn. and worked at United Technologies until he retired to Martha’s Vineyard. He had spent vacation time on the Vineyard for over 40 years.

He loved relaxing on the porch, spending time with friends and family, playing golf and cards and going clamming. He always enjoyed the sense of peace that came with being on the Island.

He was an elder for many years at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Meriden, Conn. He had a great sense of humor and brought laughter to many. His gentle nature will be missed by those who knew him.

He leaves behind his wife, Judy, of 46 years and their dog, Remy; his son, Jason Shemit, his wife, Joan, and their daughter, Addison, of Edgartown; his daughter, Jodie Smith, her husband, Judd, and their children, Lily and Holden of West Hartford, Conn.; his sister, Gerry Sperry and her husband, Miles, and their sons, Dean and Todd of Meriden; and many good friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or donations, please pass along an act of kindness in honor of Ed. Arrangements are under the care of that Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Oak Bluffs.
