Marjorie Elizabeth Grimmett of Fayetteville, Ga. died April 16. She was 92.

Marge (Santos) Grimmett was born and raised on Pine street in Vineyard Haven, very close to Tashmoo Pond where she later visited in the summer months. She married Hall W. (Buck) Grimmett from Texas in 1943 during World War II. Because of his military career, she was able to live in many states, as well as Italy, Germany, Viet Nam, Peru and Hong Kong.

Marge loved life, her family and her many friends. Even with Parkinson’s Disease, she stayed active until the past six months of her life. Her love for Martha’s Vineyard and her family and friends drew her back there off and on for most of her life.

Marge loved the Island where she worked many years in different businesses. Many hours were spent knitting items for family and friends. As her granddaughter Elizabeth would say, “When she was sitting she was knitting.” When she could get a small group together she enjoyed a good card game. She loved playing cards with her two cousins Louise Estrella and Louise Robinson and friend Betty Ortiz. She also taught her grandchildren and great-grandchildren the love of cards.

She would always swim in Tashmoo Pond, even the cold freshwater springs didn’t stop her, and in her later years swam across and back. She also enjoyed quahaugging by doing the twist and digging with her toes. She loved seafood so much that when there was a family reunion she always made sure one night was a lobster feast. She also loved to dance and took classes offered on the Island. She received the Gold Star Mothers Club plaque. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 257, the Portuguese American Club, where she volunteered at the Holy Ghost Feast with her family at one of the food stands. She volunteered with the Kairos Group with her daughter.

She was preceded in death by her son Jon Grimmett and sister Helen Santos Whorton. She is survived by daughter Sue Martin and husband Bob of Fayetteville, Ga., son Hall Grimmett Jr. and wife Rose of Richland, Ga., son Barry Grimmett and wife Kathleen of Columbus, Ga.; grandchildren Robert Martin and wife Angie, Elizabeth Doster and husband Dean, Hall Grimmett 3rd, Jon Martin and wife Alisha, Pepper Grimmett and Amber Fitzgerald; great-grandchildren Austin and Georgia Martin, Drake, Willow and Iris Weldon, Kylie and Korie Doster, Ryvers, Ridge, Birch, Bramble, Adler, Beck and Juni Martin. She is also survived by her brother George Santos Sr. of Vineyard Haven, many nieces, nephews, family members and loving friends.

Marge’s family wants to especially thank Janet Chastain (our God-sent angel), and Mary Ann, Pam, Allison and Steve from Amedisys Hospice for their love, care and support.

A memorial service was held on April 20 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Ga. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 13, at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven at 11 a.m. with collation to follow at the P.A. Club in Oak Bluffs.
