Barbara Ann Berninger of Oak Bluffs died Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She was 82.

Barbara was born on Sept. 21, 1930 in the Bronx, N.Y., to John and Ethel Annie (Winder) Walter. She worked for the New York Telephone Company and was very proud at the age of 50 to become the first woman lineman. After her retirement more than 30 years ago, she moved permanently to Oak Bluffs.

Barbara is survived by her children, Susan Pillard of Texas, John Berninger of Mashpee, Elizabeth Requena of Oak Bluffs, Thomas Berninger of Oak Bluffs and Joanne LaPierre of Vineyard Haven, as well as 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and two grandchildren, John Berninger Jr. and Sarah Berninger.

A graveside service will be held at noon on Monday, Sept. 23 in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven. Donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 1748, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
