Nelson Guyther died peacefully at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on May 21, surrounded by loved ones. His long battle with cancer came to an end. He was 55.

Nelson was born in Beth Page, N.Y., in 1958 to Marcia and Wayne Guyther. The family moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 1972 to his mother’s childhood home. After graduating from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and attending the Museum School of Art in Boston, he returned to the Island to work at his family’s lumberyard, H.N.Hinckley & Sons Inc., where he helped to expand the business over the years and open the Ace Hardware Store.

A deeply private person, Nelson enjoyed drawing and writing. Always true to his New York roots, he remained a loyal Jets football fan throughout his life.

He was survived by his sister Laura Abbady of Forestdale, Mass., his brother Wayne and his wife Mary Ellen of Oak Bluffs, and his sister Elizabeth and her husband Joseph Cosgrove of Edgartown; his nieces Andrea and Allyse Guyther and Jaimie Cosgrove; his nephews Khalid Abbady, Chad Guyther and Joseph, Liam and Tucker Cosgrove, as well as his uncle, Anthony Guyther.
