Robert Dudley Harrington Jr. died on Nov. 5 of complications from Lewy Body disease. He was 81.

He was loyal to several prominent causes and active in more than a dozen organizations, many of them focused on the environment and enjoyment of the outdoors.

A New Englander for his entire life, Mr. Harrington was an entrepreneur, owning the business Printers Express; a venture capitalist, sponsoring the commercial ideas of others; and a financier, working for Morgan Guarantee in Worcester, where his family lived for generations.

To his work, Mr. Harrington brought substantial education. He held an MBA from Columbia Business School, and he earned his undergraduate degree at Brown University, where an active role in his fraternity foreshadowed his later dedication to social and beneficent organizations. Earlier on, Mr. Harrington had attended Bancroft School, as well as the Manlius School, a military school. The training he received at Manlius served him later in life as a member of the National Guard.

He felt strongly about the environment, especially the waters off the coast of New England, which he expressed through his support of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He was president of its associates group, which advances the institution’s scientific, research and education mission.

For Mr. Harrington, life on the water was the only way life could be lived. He was commodore of Edgartown Yacht Club from 1998 to 1999, volunteering as an officer for many years before that, and belonged to the New York Yacht Club as well. He also was an avid sportsman and explorer, holding memberships in the Connecticut Travelers, Round Hill Club, Ad Sports, and Greenwich Riding Club. Mr. Harrington celebrated his New England heritage by belonging to the Fairfield Group, New England Society and Pilgrim Society. As a Mason, he held connections to the Holland Lodge, Grand Lodge and Guiding Lights Lodge.

He is survived by his wife Clare Gesualdo Harrington, and his sister, Sarah Harrington Williams. He was predeceased by his father Robert Dudley Harrington and his mother Ann Harrington.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m. at Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Road, Greenwich, Conn., followed by a reception at the Round Hill Club, 33 Round Hill Club Road, Greenwich. Interment will be in advance and will be private.

An additional memorial service will be held in Edgartown in summer 2015.
