Florence (Flip) Louise Curme Horton of Vineyard Haven died peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 9, after a short stay at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 89.

The daughter of Dr. George O. Curme Jr. and Lillian (Hale) Curme, Louise was born in Charleston, W.Va., on April 18, 1925. Louise had spent summers on East Chop with her parents and siblings since 1927. Her home was in White Plains, N.Y., until her marriage to Richard C. Horton in 1950. They raised their family in Rhode Island and Westchester County, N.Y. Her family continued the Vineyard summer tradition with their three daughters.

Louise graduated from Wheaton College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1947. She attended many college reunions and always stayed in touch with her classmates.

She and her husband originally retired to Arizona, but after his death she moved to the Vineyard year round in 2003. She was an active member and volunteer in a variety of organizations including the Tisbury Senior Center, Vineyard Haven library, Windemere, and the Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Club. She was an avid reader, tennis player and enjoyed bridge with her good friends. Louise’s love of travel took her all over the globe.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. We all had the good fortune of having her in our lives.

Louise was predeceased by her husband Richard and her granddaughter, Caitlin Wilson. She is survived by three daughters, Elli Poerner of Oak Bluffs, Elizabeth Armstrong and her husband Ralph of Shutesbury, Mass., Diane Horton of New York city, and six grandchildren, Rollie and Annamarie Armstrong of Munich, Germany, Daniel and Lisa Phelan of Hayward, Calif., Seamus Barrett of New York city, Capt. Andrew and Krizia Armstrong of Manassas, Va., Claire and Isaiah Phelan-Phillips of Oak Bluffs, and Kris and Olivia Armstrong of Barre, Mass., four great-grandsons, her brother George O. Curme 3rd and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 13, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. for family and friends to share remembrances of Louise in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown Road, Oak Bluffs.
