Martha Mary Mains of Beverly died peacefully at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers on Saturday, Feb. 14, following a lengthy illness due to viral encephalitis. She was 54.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in May of 1990 and was awarded honors with distinction. Her area of concentration was painting. She applied her knowledge and skills to become a masterful landscaper, seamstress and artist, working for several loyal clients around Cape Ann. Many homes and gardens are graced with her touches. She was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, dog owner, and friend.

Martha was originally from Manchester-by-the-Sea, and spent many happy years living and working on Martha’s Vineyard. She had recently resided in Rockport.

She is survived by her mother Josepha (Chukki) Mains of the Herrick House in Beverly, her daughter Camilla Lambert of Salisbury, three sisters, Judy Dowd of Montgomery, Chris Vey of Marblehead, Catie Mains of Olympia, Wash., and a brother Peter Mains of Gloucester. She is also survived by her nephew Luke Wogan of Rochester, N.H., and his three daughters, Chloe, Luci and Charlotte. She was predeceased by her father, John Harold Mains, of South Paris, Me.

A memorial and celebration of life is planned for 5 p.m. on Friday, July 10, at Tuck’s Point Chowder House in Manchester. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930.
