Patricia (Patsy) Lamborn Coward Kolbe of Montclair, N.J., Essex Fells, N.J. and Edgartown, died peacefully in her sleep on May 22 at her home in Crane’s Mill, West Caldwell, N.J. She was 88.

She was born in Montclair, N.J., on March 17, 1927, the eldest daughter of Anna F. and John W. Lamborn and eldest granddaughter of Elizabeth D. and George D. Flynn of Pohogonot Farm, where she spent her childhood summers.

Patsy graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Maplehurst, in New York, N.Y., and attended Trinity College in Washington, D.C. She was a kindergarten teacher at Kimberley School in Montclair, N.J., before she married John Mortimer Coward on May 19, 1950. They had seven children. She and John were married for 41 years until his death in 1991.

Patsy married K. William (Bill) Kolbe on April 30, 1994. His children Kim, Buzz and Katie joined the clan. Pat and Bill enjoyed 12 happy years of marriage before his death in 2006.

When her children were young, Pat studied child psychology at Caldwell College for Women. She was an active volunteer and recorded books for the blind, then learned to transcribe books into braille for the Lighthouse Braille project. She was an excellent cook, using these skills as a tester and contributor to several Junior League of Montclair cookbooks.

Pat loved to entertain and travel, and was often found working on an intricate needlepoint project. She made kneelers for many churches, including one for St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in England. She was a world traveler, and particularly loved cruising and she sailed on all of the Cunard liners. Pat made great friends all over the world. She was an early environmentalist, a member of the Garden Club of Montclair, and a Sustainer Emeritus of the Junior League of Montclair-Newark. She was also a member of the Montclair Golf Club, the Edgartown Yacht Club, and a lady of the Edgartown Reading Room.

Patsy is survived by her sister Florence Peters of Princeton, N.J., and Edgartown; her brothers John Lamborn of Green Valley, Ariz. and George Lamborn of South Hampton, N.Y., and Vero Beach, Fla.; and her sister in law, Audrey McBratney Bittner of Charlotte, N.C. She was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Lamborn.

She is also survived by her children: George D. Flynn 2nd of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Patricia Coward Post and her husband Peter of Charlotte, Vt.,John (Jay) Mortimer Coward 3rd and his wife Joan of Ben Lomond, Calif., Elizabeth Miller of Charlestown, Carroll Coward of Westport, Conn., David Coward of Caldwell, N.J., Sara Blum and her husband Jay of Shelburne, Vt.; and stepchildren Kim Kolbe of Roseland, N.J., William (Buzz) Kolbe of Plano, Tex.; and Katie Kolbe, of Steamboat Springs, Colo.

She was the proud grandmother of Michael Flynn and his wife Jennifer, Scott Flynn and his wife Maureen, Anna Post and her husband Matthew Bushlow, Elizabeth Post, Alyson Coward, Arianna Coward, Daniel Miller, Miguel Miller and Carolyn Blum. She was especially proud to be the great-grandmother of Owen Flynn, son of Michael and Jennifer.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 271 Roseland avenue in Essex Fells, N.J., on June 4 at 11 a.m.
