Dickinson (Dick) Murray Upson, Rehoboth and a former Martha’s Vineyard resident, died on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, R.I. He was 66. He was the husband of the late Jeraldine Jane (Warsyk) Upson, who died on March 14, 2008.

Dick was born on June 20, 1949 in Waterbury, Conn. A longtime resident of Rehoboth, he was a graduate of Northfield Mount Hermon High School, class of 1967. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College, and continued his post-graduate education at Kent State University, where he received his master’s degree. He went on to enjoy work as an adjunct professor of communication at Roger Williams University and Fisher College, as well as at Bristol Community College.

Dick was a former disc jockey at WHJY, a screenplay writer, and he assisted with the Rhode Island Film Festival and at the Roger Williams University radio station. He served as a member of the Liberal Arts Council and was the executive director of the United Jewelry Show for 10 years.

He is survived by his children, Caitlin Q. Upson and Brooke W. Upson of Rehoboth. He was the brother of Thomas F. (Tim) Upson of Waterbury, Conn., and Warren T. (Terry) Upson of Naples, Fla., and leaves several nieces and nephews and many friends.

A memorial service for Dick was held Saturday, Oct. 3 at Community Church of Providence.
