Wintucket Cove Prescribed Fire Planned

The Vineyard Golf Club (VGC) is planning a prescribed fire to enhance the ecological value of the Wintucket Cove frost bottom, located at the southerly end of the VGC property along Edgartown –West Tisbury Road. The prescribed burn is expected to occur sometime between April 22nd and no later than May 17th. The exact date is unknown at this time, as it is highly dependent on weather conditions being favorable to allow the prescribed fire to be conducted safely and with minimal air quality impacts to nearby residences. Prescribed burns are an effective means of enhancing the ecological value of grasslands and scrub oak communities. VGC has contracted Northeast Forest and Fire Management, LLC, (NE-FFM) a natural resources management and consulting firm that specializes in planning and implementing prescribed burns, to conduct the work. NE-FFM estimates that there have been three to five prescribed burns conducted each year on Martha’s Vineyard for the past decade and that 30 to 50 prescribed fires are conducted on mainland Massachusetts annually. The Wintucket Cove frost bottom has historically supported habitat for a number of state-listed rare species, including Northern Harrier, a ground nesting bird, and several rare moth species. The quality of the habitat has been reduced in recent years by the growth and increased density of vegetation. VGC, in cooperation with Sherriff’s Meadow Foundation, has periodically thinned canopy trees, and the prescribed fire is part of an overall habitat management program designed to enhance rare species habitat. Improving the ecological value of the frost bottom reflects VGC’s commitment to responsible stewardship of the unique ecology of the island, as is most conspicuously evidenced by its nationally recognized organic turf management practices. Questions regarding the prescribed fire management of the Wintucket Cove Frost Bottom may be directed to Jeffrey Carlson, VGC Property Manager, at (508)627-8930 EXT. 100, or jeffcarlson@vineyardgolf.com.
