The girls' tennis team fended off a tough Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Friday afternoon, taking a 4-1 win over Bishop Stang to move to a 5-4 season record.
Junior Charlotte Potter picked up the first Vineyard win of the day, going 6-0, 6-1 against Lauren Shallcrom at third singles. At first doubles, juniors Diamond Araujo and Avery Hazell went 6-2, 6-4 to put the team up 2-0 after the first hour of play.
Freshman Madison McBride and sophomore Amadine Muniz, playing second doubles, dropped a close 4-6 set to Jacqui Andrade and Emily McGrath, but rolled to 6-1, 6-1 wins to take the match.
At first singles, junior Samantha Potter outlasted Katie Vasconclos to go 6-3, 7-5. Junior Josie Iadicicco, playing Stang's Emma Mills at second singles, battled to a 7-5 first set and fell 4-6 in the second before beginning a gritty third set. Iadicicco fell 6-10, closing a match that lasted more than two hours.
The team hosts Pope John Paul II High School in a nonleague match on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
