JANE N. SLATER
This week has been the peak for viewing the fall leaf colors. All our roads are pleasant to drive as they have many red and yellow trees along the roadsides. Wednesday’s rain showers and strong wind reduced some of the colorful display but the show should last another week or so.

Jim and Roberta Morgan traveled to Hyannis last weekend to ride the dinner train along the Cape Cod Canal. They celebrated Roberta’s birthday on the outing and enjoyed the mainland scenery.
Speaking of birthdays, I have to send greetings from us all to two local landmarks who celebrated last week: Everett Poole and Bud Mayhew.
Work began this week at the Galley, repairing the fire-damaged roof. The Fenner family plans to reopen the popular restaurant next spring.
My history note for this week concerns Split Rock. The Jan. 27, 1916 Vineyard Gazette carried the news that a large rock on the north shore near Keephicken (sic) had closed its split. The article claims that pictures exist that show it open and then closed. Do any pictures or stories about this geological phenomenon still exist?
