Celebrate National Poetry Month with readings by three published Chilmark poets: Margaret (Peggy) Howe Freydberg, John Maloney and Donald Nitchie. The authors will read some of their favorite poems on Wednesday, April 9, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Chilmark Public Library.

Ms. Freydberg recently celebrated her 100th birthday at the library surrounded by family, friends and poetry written by her and especially for her. Ms. Freydberg is the author of several novels, a memoir, a book of short stories and two poetry books, Evening on the Pond and Wanting.

Mr. Maloney, a Chilmark stonemason, was commissioned in 1994 by the Town of Chilmark Tri-centennial Committee to write poems about Chilmark and its history. He will read from some of his new writings as well as from his book of poems, Proposal. His poetry has been published in The New York Times, Poetry, Ploughshares, and Poetry Northwest.

Mr. Nitchie is the editor of the monthly magazine The Banjo Newsletter. He received his master’s of fine arts in poetry from Columbia University School of the Arts and will read from his recently published book, Driving Lessons.

National Poetry Month was started in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets in order to bring greater attention to poets, poetry and our poetic heritage. It has been held every April since and is now the largest literary celebration in the world.

Admission is free. All are welcome. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Chilmark Public Library. For more information, call 508-645-3360.
