In Paul Schneider’s 2001 book, The Enduring Shore, there is a photo of Menemsha, courtesy of the Martha’s Vineyard Historical Society, from the silent film, Annabel Lee.

Movie-lover Eric Cohen, of Chicago, Ill., writes that this 1921 adaptation of the Edgar Allen Poe poem was partially shot on Martha’s Vineyard, which is referred to in the movie as a village. A small company called Grapevine Video has just put out a DVD of this obscure, independent film. Grapevine supplies silent cinephiles with affordable DVDs of rarities, usually transferred from beautiful, but flammable, original 35mm nitrate prints from private collections and archives. Such is the case with Annabel Lee. There are black and white scenes of Menensha, pre-Texaco, and also Gay Head. There are exteriors of houses and gardens but they don’t have the Island look.

Mr. Cohen notes that the film is available for $16.95 plus shipping online at grapevinevideo.com.
