Get out your pens and checkbooks, this is my annual holiday shopping wish list for us all: Red Stocking continues to serve children in need on the Vineyard, so there is something under the tree and food on the table. While toys and baby furniture can be donated, the fund pays for necessities for kids, especially for the winter — warm hats, gloves, socks, jackets, pajamas. Lorraine Clark, Kerry Alley and Barbara Gilbert work on this fund year-round. Lorraine tells me at least 300 Island children are in need of these services this year. You may send your donation to Red Stocking, c/o the M.V. Savings Bank, P.O. Box 668, Vineyard Haven, or to Lorraine Clark, 131 Fairfield avenue, Vineyard Haven, or to Kerry Alley, P.O. Box 346, Oak Bluffs.

Women Empowered is another of my favorites. This nonprofit organization, Kaye Flather’s baby, helps men and women to take control of their lives. Send your donation to Women Empowered, P.O. Box 1253, Vineyard Haven.

We were not going to let the MSPCA dump us. The new animal shelter, taken over by our own Islanders, is called the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 190, Edgartown. Don’t forget the furry and feathered ones for the winter. Our Martha’s Vineyard Cerebral Palsy Camp has sent out its annual appeal. Many of us have friends and neighbors who have received great benefits from Jabberwocky’s summer camp. Send your donation to P.O. Box 1357, Vineyard Haven.

If you can’t donate money, donate your precious time. Help with Serving Hands (formerly Island Food Pantry), give your time to the new animal shelter, visit the residents at Windemere, volunteer at our fine libraries, a local day care center, your church or synagogue. God bless you all.

Intrepid seasonal resident Jim Hart is still corresponding for the Condo News of West Palm Beach, Fla. Jim sends me copies of his articles, all are interesting and packed with his and his friends records of service to their communities.

Bill and Debbie Little are so proud of their son in law, Angel Quinones, as are we all. Angel, an extraordinary artist and tattooist, opened Amity Custom Ink in the arts district of Oak Bluffs, on Dukes County avenue, last summer. Angel commutes from his main residence in Providence and is here to decorate you Thursdays through Sundays. Angel has given freely of his time to youth groups in Providence and is renowned for his ability to turn the younger generation on to the possibilities of art. The mayor of Providence has just given Angel an award in recognition of his hard and great work with young people.

Welcome back to all our college students returning for Thanksgiving. Please leave the swine flu on the other side.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along Heidi Schwab and Fan Tuttle today. Tomorrow is for Joey Tobin, and Aidan Gomez Blanco turns six! Nov. 29 is claimed by Laine Levandowski. Nov. 30 honors Marcia Cunningham. Dec. 1 is shared by Becca Dunham and Peter Sanborn. Dec. 2 is a party for Allison Silva, Lucy DiTerlizzi and Mitch Wertlieb. And on Dec. 3, fellow correspondent John Alley takes the cake. Many happy returns.
