An Island woman died in a single-car accident Monday afternoon on Eastville avenue, across from the entrance to the emergency room at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Rachel Dow, 37, of Pennywise Path in Edgartown, was driving out of the hospital parking lot around 5:45 p.m. when she drove through the T-shaped intersection into the woods across the street. According to Massachusetts state police trooper David Parent, her vehicle burst into flames.

Oak Bluffs police and fire personnel, as well as state police, responded to the scene and tried to remove Ms. Dow from the car. She was transported by ambulance to the Island hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Trooper Parent said Ms. Dow may have suffered a medical emergency causing her foot to press down on the vehicle’s accelerator.

The state police accident reconstruction team arrived on Tuesday to investigate the crash.

A full report will appear in Friday’s Gazette.
