The no-snow claim is still valid for Chilmark. The snows of midweek are gone and we are clear underfoot. A brief trip off-Island this week showed me all the snow I need to see this winter.

Dorothy Bangs will again be selling the first daffodils of the season on March 16 for the American Cancer Society. This year Dorothy will be at Cronig’s Supermarket in Vineyard Haven at 10 a.m. and will be there until she is sold out. Jacque Renear will be selling at a table outside the cafeteria at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital also on March 16. Thanks to these dedicated volunteers who have been raising money for the American Cancer Society by selling daffodils for many years.

Josh Aronie will be taking a week off next week from his Menemsha Café. He will close after dinner on Friday night, March 7, and not reopen until March 14. His hours will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday thru Friday with dinners offered on Friday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. It has been a treat to have thecafé open all winter.

Bette Carroll is at her Menemsha home after a brief visit to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital this past week. It will be good to see her out and about soon. Best wishes from us all.

Deborah Nagengast, former Chilmarker and now a resident of Albany, was in town this week to attend the memorial for her friend Joy Flanders. She also visited with old friends.

The Chilmark library will host class number five of the Getting Connected series led by BZ Riger on Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. This class will be about how to use and enjoy YouTube.

We all send cheers to Brooks Carroll who suffered a sports-related injury last week that required three staples in his scalp. He is the popular seven-year-old son of Marshall and Katie Carroll and is on the fast track to recovery as I write.

We all send congratulations to James Taylor who received the 2010 National Medal of Arts for his remarkable contributions to American music. He was at the White House on Wednesday last to attend the ceremonies and share lunch with the awardees and the President and his family. I wonder if they had a chance to talk about their shared Chilmark lives? Trudi Taylor, James’s mother who lives in Quitsa, was among those invited to the event. I’m sure all of Chilmark is proud to have had a part in James’s music making talents. Cheers to James!

The longer days and hint of spring takes the Chilmark Community Church back to pizza nights, beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays. There will be outdoor games on the lawn, weather permitting. All are welcome at no charge.

A program of story and song for all ages will be presented at the Chilmark Community Center on March 12 at ll a.m. The program is a multi-cultural celebration with Davis Bates and Roger Tincknell. It is presented by the Martha’s Vineyard Library Association with support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. All are invited.

The Yard Inc. has announced four new trustees elected to serve the Chilmark-based art colony. They are the Hon. Colleen McMahon, Laura Roosevelt, Jennifer P. Goodale and Deborah M. Sale. You can learn more about the Yard and their programs at dancetheyard.org.

The hints of spring in the air remind me that May 14 and 15 are coming up and will be the days of the annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Boston. Susan Larsen and her daughter, Brigida, are in training now for that event. Susan will walk and Brigida will provide support as a member of the Youth Crew. The walk is sponsored by donations from all of us so I hope you are thinking about offering Susan your financial sponsorship. Her Web site is avonwalk.org/goto/susan.larsen. We are all proud of the large response to her efforts last year and are hoping to top that this year. She is dedicating this year’s walk to the men and women of the Armed Forces who are fighting breast cancer or have loved ones in that battle. Susan is a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. Go, Susan!

Some folks may listen for the voice of the turtle but I am counting the sound of the pile driver as my hint of spring!
