The month of March came in like a lamb, no doubt about it. We will now see whether it goes out like a lion. It sure has been like a ghost town all week, largely because it is school vacation and many families are on the move. Some people have left Dodge for a warmer climate while others have gone up north to ski. Even the usually busy Reliable Market down in Oak Bluffs has suffered a slowdown from its normally brisk pace. But there are thoughts of spring, just two weeks away, and the daylight is getting longer each day. Susan Block reports that Frank Adams’s flower garden on Music street is nearly blooming and Anna Alley has spotted many robins flying about her backyard. Daylight saving time begins next Sunday.

Dan Waters reports that the final draft of the two library-related articles that will be included in this year’s annual town meeting warrant have been completed. Both are formalities required of grant applicants by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The state library board wants to know if the town supports the project. The committee plans to do an informational mass mailing before the town meeting.

Another item of interest on the warrant is a home rule petition that would allow restaurants to sell beer and wine with meals.

Cathlin Baker, minister of the Congregational Church, invites all to a Mardi Gras celebration and pancake supper on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. Masks, beads, children’s activities and live music featuring Rick and Hudson Bausman and Brian Weiland will all be part of the fun. The suggested donation is $5 per person or $15 per family. The theme is Today We Live! An Ash Wednesday service of healing and wholeness will be held at noon the following day. A historical note about Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday marks the beginning of the Christian period of Lent.

Help is needed to turn the church into Bourbon street as we prepare for Mardi Gras. Electric griddles, fruit salad and bottles of juice are needed as well as volunteers to help set and clean up, greet community members, cook and serve. If you can contribute in one of these ways, look for Karen Achille at coffee hour on Sunday and let her know how you can help.

Cathy Minkiewicz, reports that Bible 101 will be held tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon in the parish hall. Come explore some of the basic facts about the Bible. Bring your own Bible or they will have one for you, thanks to a grant from Massachusetts Bible Society. Call 508-693-2842 to register.

Town clerk Tara Whiting reports that the deadline to file nomination papers for the annual town election has passed. There will be two contests on the April ballot. Gina Solon, Alix Small and incumbent Linda Hearn seek two seats on the library trustee board. And three candidates will seek two seats on the finance committee ballot, all political newcomers: Joe Gervais, Gary Montrowl and Katherine Triantafillou.

Allen Whiting is featured in an article in this month’s edition of Yankee Magazine. He was photographed in his studio.

Manny and Sharon Estrella returned home yesterday after a vacation in Led-yard, Conn. They made their annual trip down to Foxwood. Manny reports that they had a wonderful time and it was rewarding.

Phyllis Meras returned home last Sunday after a business trip to New York city.

Colleen Morris over at the library has returned after a brief vacation. Today at 4 p.m. you are invited to an artist’s reception for Linda Ziegler, the artist of the month, at the library. And the winter reading series continues on March 9. On March 13 at 3 p.m. you are invited to come to the second annual limerick challenge. Share your favorite limerick or just listen.

Happy birthday to: Valentine Estabrook, Vicki Broschett and Diana DeBlase today; Ira Lowe, David Brodsky and Kenneth Vincent tomorrow; Doug Seward, Patricia Kirwin and Hans Adcock on Sunday; Liza Lawson, Jeanne Barron, Polly Bassett, Mike Eldridge and Susannah Maher on Monday; Jim Alley, Elizabeth Mahoney and Wayne Arruda on Tuesday; Alma Benson, Jane Konicki, Donald DeSorcy and Shannon Rynd-Ray on Wednesday; Sue Merrill, Jeffrey Enter and Max Currier on Thursday. Belated birthday wishes to Leonard Jason Jr., Jim O’Connell and Julie Chang.

Well, that is all of the social news for this edition. If you have any news please call or e-mail me. Have a great week.
