The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will sponsor an evening with Marty Nadler in his only July appearance on the Vineyard this year, titled Very Vineyard 2011. Marty is a veteran Hollywood comedy writer and former head writer for Happy Days as well as many other programs. His one-man show will be held on Saturday, July 9 at 7 p.m. at Grace Church on Woodlawn avenue in Vineyard Haven. Tickets are $25 each for the benefit of the Center for Living in their quest to build a permanent home for the Supportive Day Program for those 55 and above who may be at risk if left alone during the day or those experiencing social isolation. Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served while enjoying Marty and his comedy.

Aquinnah photographer John Wightman will present Island Images at a reception on Saturday, July 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard at Beetlebung Corner. The show is a wonderful collection of John’s work over the past 30 years. Many new items will be featured this year, including ceramic tiles and glass cutting boards. John and Jan will host the reception on Saturday evening. His work will be on display at the bank through July 15 during banking hours.

Vineyard author Geraldine Brooks will discuss her latest book, Caleb’s Crossing, at the Aquinnah town hall on Tuesday, July 12, from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Her novel is based on a historic premise in which a Wampanoag tribal member from the Vineyard became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard University. Historically, Caleb Cheeshahtamuck was the first Vineyarder to attend Harvard. It is a story of love, faith, magic and adventure. A native of Australia, Ms. Brooks lives year-round in West Tisbury. She is an author and a journalist, winning the Pulitzer Prize in March 2006. Refreshments will be served.

There will be a special town meeting on Tuesday, July 12 at 7 p.m. There are only three items on the warrant. A quorum of 40 voters will be required to conduct the business of the town.

The Aquinnah Cultural Center will feature traditional pottery tomorrow from 1 to 3 p.m. with a $10 craft fee. For information, please call 508-645-7900.

The seventh annual Old South Road Association Fourth of July parade was the largest one ever. More than 100 children participated in the parade — all appropriately dressed in their red, white, and blue attire. There were an equal number of adults to cheer them on. This is still one of the best-kept secrets in Aquinnah and only those residing along the parade route really know it is happening. The discovery of hidden treasure in the form of bags of candy were found in two large treasure chests at Philbin Beach following the parade. Hats were sold to commemorate the day with the proceeds going to the Aquinnah Public Library for the children’s book section. A wonderful event — everyone in town should participate next year! Thank you to all involved who make the parade such a spectacular event.

Vineyard author Susan Klein will present a storytelling concert to benefit Habitat for Humanity on July 9 at 7 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Performing Arts Center. Susan will discuss growing up on the Vineyard.

The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living would like to thank Bob and Ernestine Kinnecom for their generous donations of custom-embroidered aprons for the MVC4L board members. We shall wear them proudly at each of our events.

Richard and Karen Duffy are at their Aquinnah home for their summer sojourn. They thoroughly enjoyed attending the 50th anniversary of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School cheerleading team in November, of which Karen was one of the first members.

Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Michelle Laurie, who died on July 1, following her admission to Hospice. Michelle and her husband, Philip Robinson, enjoyed their time in Aquinnah where she was the library assistant. A memorial service will be held in September on the Vineyard.

Joseph Lee, son of Marshall Lee and Martha Vanderhoop, recently graduated from Newton South High School. He will be headed to Columbia University in September. His brother, Samuel, will be a senior at Yale University in September.

Luis Quirama and his daughter, Soleil, were weekend guests of the Vanderhoop family while visiting friends across town. Luis previously worked at the Aquinnah Shop and as a counselor for the Wampanoag tribe.

Charles W. Vanderhoop 3rd is at his Aquinnah home for two weeks enjoying his time with family and friends. He is sharing his Manhattan home with his nephew, Samuel, who has an internship in New York for the summer. They were both in Aquinnah over the holiday weekend.

Congratulations to William D. Vanderhoop Jr., known as Captain Buddy along the western shore, as a runner-up in the Best of the Vineyard 2011 winners according to the Martha’s Vineyard Magazine. Of course, Captain Bud was recognized for his charter fishing business.
