Aquinnah voters will be asked at a special town meeting Tuesday night to restore the town’s full share of the Tri-Town Ambulance Service budget and pay for a portion of an affordable housing study.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the old Aquinnah town hall. Michael Hebert will preside over the short, three-article warrant. A quorum of 39 voters is needed to convene the meeting.

The first and largest spending article is to restore $25,900 to the budget for the up-Island ambulance service. Voters originally approved cutting the budget at the annual town meeting in May when selectmen argued there was no need for an assistant ambulance chief.

At a meeting last month with the selectmen of the three towns which the service serves — Aquinnah, West Tisbury and Chilmark — Aquinnah selectman Jim Newman said he did not know why the town had arbitrarily chosen that number as opposed to the full $59,500 designated for the position in next year’s budget.

Assessments for each town went up 40 per cent for the 2012 budget. Aquinnah voters only approved $134,360 of their allotted assessment.

Mr. Newman said this week if a quorum is not reached at Tuesday’s meeting, the selectmen will pay the full bill and place the article on another warrant in the future.

The second article is to fund the town’s portion of an affordable housing needs assessment led by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. Voters will be asked to take $4,000 from the community preservation affordable housing reserve to put toward the study. The town share will only be paid if the other five towns agree to pay a share as well.

Edgartown selectmen have already voted not to fund the study.

The final article asks voters to approve $300 to pay the planning board clerk for extra hours worked last year.
