The Holmes Hole Sailing Association continued its summer season of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a night race on June 30 and a Sound race on July 3.

Thursday night was a nice evening with a 15 knot west-southwest wind. Eleven boats posted for the 6 p.m. start at red nun 6. The course took the fleet to nun 4 at West Chop, then to green can 23a at East Chop and back to nun 6. The first leg was a broad reach on the port tack. After rounding the nun, a starboard reach and run to the can was followed by a beat to windward to the finish line.

Finishing first was Mike Loberg in the Morris 36, Masquerade. In second was Ed Cerullo in the Morris 36, Undine. In third was Peter Wagner in the Sonar, Spring. Fourth was Phil Hale in Wicked, fifth was Dan Culkin in Magic Time, sixth was Ernie Mendenhall in Rocinante III, seventh was David Lott in Avanti, eighth was Jerry Goodale in Stormalong, ninth was Roger Becker in Gloria, tenth was Mary Worrell in Second Wind and eleventh was Charlie Felder in Blu J.

Sunday was a warm, overcast day with a 15 knot southwest wind. Seventeen boats posted for the start gun at red nun 6 outside the Vineyard Haven harbor breakwater.

The race committee set a 10.2-mile course in the waters on the border of Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds, which took the fleet on a triangular course from the starting line north to red nun 16 off Great Pond in Falmouth, then east to red nun 14 off Falmouth harbor, and returning to Vineyard Haven harbor. The current in the Sounds was setting across the course to the east throughout the race.

The fleet ran downwind by nun 4 at West Chop, keeping the buoy to port, and ran across the sound to Falmouth. After rounding nun 16, the boats sailed full and by on the port tack to nun 16, hardened up, and beat across the sound to the finish, honoring red nun four at West Chop.

In the A Division, finishing first was Penelope, an Alerion 28 sailed by Mo Flam. In second was Andy Berry in the Cal 33, Isobar. Third was Mike Loberg in the Morris 36, Masquerade. Fourth was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson, Stormalong, fifth was Irving Gates in King Kiwi, sixth was Frank Satula in Soma Holiday, seventh was Ed Cerullo in Undine, eighth was Peter Goodale in Stormalong II, ninth was Paul Hyman-Young in Eclipse, tenth was a tie between Dan Pesch in Remedy and John Thelby in Phoenix, and twelfth was Roger Becker in Gloria.

In the B Division, first place was David Lott in the Cape Dory, Avant. Second was Rebecca Colson in the Nonsuch, Silhouette. In third was Stuart Halpert in the Ensign, Providence. Fourth was Dan Culkin in Magic Time and fifth was Jim Pringle in Myfanwy.
