The Tisbury Street Fair, scheduled for this evening, has been postponed until Saturday evening due to weather.

It will begin at 6 p.m. in Vineyard Haven promising the same great food, face painting, climbing walls and lots more.

The town of Tisbury is turning 340 years old this year. Forty years ago the town decided the candles had become a bit too plentiful for a mere cake and the birthday bash known as the Tisbury Street Fair was born.

The logistics are rather straightforward. Close down Main street and invite the whole Island to celebrate. Each year seems to get bigger and better, lending credence to the old adage, if you provide the lobster, they will come.

There is music and dancing in the street, plus food ranging from the shellfish bounty of the Island to funnel cake and fried dough for all. Last year over 100 vendors lined the streets and 1000 plus clams were shucked and slurped by 8 p.m.

There is also face painting, a climbing wall, food, numerous live bands, did we mention food. But most of all it’s a chance to take part in a community celebration grounded in goodwill and love for the Vineyard way of life, both past and present.
