It was 50 degrees today. The sunsets have been beautiful, scallopers have been out reaping their harvest and people are working outside in T-shirts. I went to visit at Donaroma’s on Monday. One of the girls was working on the antique store window display and pointed out daffodils starting to sprout. Just think, spring is around the corner.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Samantha Patnaude, who celebrated her day Jan. 28; Audrey Polleys, Jan. 29; Mercer Kelly, Jan. 30; Meghan Delphous, Feb. 1, and to Elizabeth Hayman, who celebrates her day today, Feb. 3.

Special anniversary wishes go out to Jan and Floyd Norton, who celebrated their 61st anniversary on Jan. 27. They had a quiet day and enjoyed a nice dinner together that night. Here is to many more years together!

Anyone who is friends with Holly Mercier on Facebook has been enjoying the pictures she has been posting. Holly loves the outdoors and loves to garden and landscape, but in the off-season her passion is fishing and beachcombing. She has been scalloping with her friend Steve Kuehne and is always looking for treasures. She posted a picture of a scallop shell that was the prettiest purple. She has also found a couple of bottles in the drag. So far she has found an old ketchup bottle and a Pureoxia bottle. She has been having so much fun finding and researching them. She also has a great collection of sea glass that she combs for while walking the dogs. She definitely has salt water in her veins.

In honor of Black History Month, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society and the Island chapter of the NAACP are teaming up to present a special one-night screening of Sing Your Song, the story of Harry Belafonte. The film will screen Friday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Capawock Theatre.

Mr. Belafonte was a visitor to Martha’s Vineyard last summer to attend the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International meetings and will receive a lifetime award from Amnesty International this summer in recognition of his work on behalf of human rights.

The Martha’s Vineyard chapter of the NAACP will host its annual membership and awards dinner on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Grill on Main in Edgartown. Three community members, Karen Achille, Armen Hanjian and Connie Teixeira, will be honored. The event will also feature a civil rights conversation with Lucy Hackney, Betty Rawlins and Rose Styron. More information and tickets are available by calling 508-696-5785.

There are a number of activities taking place at the Council on Aging this week. On Thursday, Feb. 9 Diane Wall will lead a cooking class, Curious about Cardamom, with plenty of taste-testing options. The class will take place at 1:30 p.m.; advance registration is required by calling the senior center at 508-627-4368.

On Friday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. Diane Edelberg from Funtastic Getaways in East Falmouth will talk about overnight trips and day trips, and show a movie of upcoming 2012 trips. Lunch will follow. If you cannot make it, please call the senior center to give Laurie your trip suggestions for 2012. Signup is required for this event.

This is the weekend most people have been waiting for. The big game is on and, like most big sports events, we have been hearing nothing but speculation over whether Gronk is going to play, the other team is ready for our offense and, shoe strings are tied right — you get the idea. I have heard people who don’t even follow football are looking forward to the Super Bowl. Our house will be a mixed situation as Ralph is committed to the Patriots but he has been a longtime fan of the Giants. For him it is a win-win situation but I know the Pats are on the top of his list. Go Pats!

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
