As I sit here tonight I can only say one thing: Brrrr! I think we all have a pact that April 1 is when the heat goes off in the house and we turn it on only to take the chill off. Well, that is not the case this year. I think we are all ready to have some warm weather.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Kylie Hatt, who celebrated her day March 30; Nicholas Carpenter and Hollis Kelly, who celebrated March 31; Matthew Strem, Jordan Tate-Da Silva and Joshua Tate-Silva, and Gregory Pyden, who all celebrated April 2; and Sean Hegarty and Gregory Pyden, who celebrated their day April 4.

On Saturday, April 13 from 5 to 11 p.m. there will be a fund-raising dinner at the P.A. Club in Oak Bluffs for Karen (Allen) Berube, who is fighting cancer. Karen and her husband live in Edgartown; she was a waitress at the Square Rigger for many years and she did commercial fishing alongside her husband David.

Tickets for the dinner are $20 and can be bought at the P.A. Club in advance, or at the door the night of April 13. Trip Barnes will conducting a live auction, also there will be a silent auction. The dinner will feature a number of different homemade lasagnas, breads, salad and desserts. Tristan Israel, Paul Thurlow and Nancy Jephcote will play music.

Deborah Mayhew would like all to know that there will be a celebration of life memorial at the new agricultural hall in West Tisbury on Saturday, April 6 for her life partner, Todd Follansbee, who died last September. A memorial service will start at 5 p.m., followed by a potluck dinner (limited refrigeration, no warm up). There will be live music by local bands The Stragglers and The Bodes. This celebration will be similar to the 60th birthday bash Todd and Deborah hosted in 2011, which is what Todd would have wanted. All are welcome to come celebrate Todd’s life with the Mayhew and Follansbee families. Email Deborah at drdeb@vineyard.net if you have any questions.

Alicia Oleveira, a resident of Edgartown and a member of the class of 2015 at Providence College, recently spent a week working with Habitat for Humanity as part of the college’s alternative spring break program. Alicia worked on a home project in Cleveland, Ohio.

Anne Brusch of Quincy, Susan Macchi of Carver and Susan Mitnick of the Back Bay visited with Les and Judy Baynes over the holiday weekend. On Saturday, they toured Chappy, enjoying the spring weather and viewing the cliff erosion at Wasque Point and the Dyke Bridge.

Looking ahead, the Edgartown School wants all parents to know that Ride Your Bike to School Day, sponsored by the Dukes County Health Council and Mass in Motion, will be held on Wednesday, May 1. The Edgartown Police will have extra police patrols on the bike paths for this event

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
