Edgartown Hardware is branching out this spring. A new location near the Black Dog Cafe on State Road is set to open in the coming weeks.
Edgartown store manager Jonathan Polleys said that paint supplier Benjamin Moore prompted the decision, inquiring last summer about the possibility of expansion. As a result, store owners John and Pat Montes are renting space at 15 Merchant’s Mart and have renovated the former office space into an open-air store.
The new location will stock “only paint and sundries,” Mr. Polleys said, and will not have the full inventory of the Edgartown store. He estimated that 80 per cent of the hardware store’s business comes from paint sales.
Opened by the late Lauress Fisher in 1946, Edgartown Hardware was an anchor business on Main street for 60 years. Mr. and Mrs. Montes bought the store in 2001; three years ago they moved it from Main street to its present location on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road.
The opening of the Vineyard Haven store coincides with the approximate start of spring cleaning and house painting season, Mr. Polleys said.
“Our busy time is March, April, May, June,” he said. “The timing can’t be better.”
The new store will be called Edgartown Hardware and will be managed by Bob O’Neil.
A tentative opening date is set for Monday, March 10.
