Well, spring has arrived and it sure felt like it last Sunday, but just as we get comfortable we hear snow is on the way. The flowers and many birds are back and the grass is looking greener. Cardinals were at the feeder all day Sunday. The Mill Pond soon will be stocked with trout and kids and adults will be fishing there every day. Stores have started to aggressively merchandise Easter baskets. The First Congregational Church held its last Wednesday night supper of the season. Tuesday is April Fool’s Day so be wary of practical jokes. NStar has been notifying you that they will shut down power for one hour Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. to upgrade our electric service

A huge crowd turned out for the opening of the newly refurbished library on Saturday. It looked as advertised — beautiful. Patrons have returned every day since the opening, some carrying out stacks of books.

Phyllis Meras, of Music street, has returned home after a two-week trip to Italy and Switzerland. She went along with her traveling companion Sal Laterra and he reports that they had a wonderful time. Linda Baughman, her house guest, returned home to Philadelphia last Sunday.

Town clerk Tara Whiting reports that the absentee ballots for the annual town election have arrived so if you are going to be out of town on election day, you may cast your vote at the town hall during normal business hours until noon on April 7, or you may apply for an absentee ballot. The annual town election will be held on April 10, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Public Safety Building. There are no contested offices. However, on Tuesday, Maria McFarland announced a write-in campaign for the open seat on the board of assessors. If you are not sure you are a registered voter, now is the time to contact Tara at 508-696-0148.

Abigail Higgins reports that the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society will host its annual potluck dinner and social hour tomorrow night starting at 5:30 p.m. at their hall on Panhandle Road. The entertainment will be provided by the Minnesingers and all are welcome. Just bring a covered dish for six to share. If you have any questions, please call 508-693-9549.

Anna Carringer over at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, is looking for photographs taken during the 1960s on the Vineyard. If you have images that you want to share, curators will be on hand at the museum tomorrow to scan your photographs and add them to their growing digital collection. They may even be included in the upcoming exhibit, Sea Change: Martha’s Vineyard in the 1960s. All images will be scanned and returned immediately. For more information, contact her at 508-627-4441.

Ginger Duarte reports that the Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living is holding its first fundraiser of the season at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center. The Cocktails and Matinee Benefit will be held on Sunday, April 13, at 4 p.m. They will hold the fundraiser at the film center in the Tisbury Market Place. The event will include wine, hors d’oeuvres and mini-desserts prior to a showing of Away From Her, a movie starring Julie Christie. Leslie Clapp, the program director, will field questions. Mark your calendars shoppers! Due to school snow days, the Friends of the West Tisbury Library’s annual book sale will be held a little later this year. The fundraiser will begin on Friday, August 1, and run through Monday, August 4. Thank you for making a note of it. We look forward to seeing you there.

Nelia Decker over at the library reports that volunteers are needed. Please stop by and fill out an application and tell them how you’d like to help. They will be offering a volunteer orientation, so even if you were a volunteer before, let them know you’d like to continue.

Paddy Moore reports that Sen. Dan Wolf planned to hold a meet and greet at the Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Co. in Oak Bluffs from 5 to 7 p.m. and has rescheduled the event to April 7 — same time, same place.

On April 3, 1965 Chris Murphy and Allen Whiting, both students at Cornwall Academy in Great Barrington, arrived home for a two-week spring break. Chris was celebrating his 19th birthday that weekend. His father Stan observed his birthday the day before. He reported that when a person tells you their age, they are said to “celebrate” a birthday; when they won’t reveal “how much water has passed over the dam” it is said that they “observed” the occasion.
