The rain was a welcome visitor, but did it have to come on a Saturday? Anyway, we are back to sunshine and warm air. So let’s see what Mother Nature has in store for us next week.

Happy birthday to all those who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Thomas Sykes, who celebrated his day Oct. 11, Kenneth Cook 3rd, Oct. 14, Reese McCracken, Oct. 15, and to Zachary Benoit and Kylie Estrella who celebrate their day today, Oct. 17.

In the spring we announce that one of the best signs is the Dairy Queen opening. Now, in the fall, we have to say that they will be cutting their hours. It used to be that they would be closing, but they are staying open until the middle of December.

They will be open Thursday through Sunday. Also, a reminder that they give back to the community as they are open Halloween and children that come in with a costume can get a free small ice cream. It was great fun last year, so hope to see you this year. Thanks to Erika, Tony and AJ.

Tom Dresser and Jerold Muskin will talk about their new book, Music on Martha’s Vineyard, next Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum on School street. The talk starts at 5:30 p.m. and is free.

Music on Martha’s Vineyard traces the history of harmony on the Vineyard from sea chanteys to the Tivoli, from the Moon Cusser to the Hot Tin Roof. Learn about the background of the Flying Elbows, the Community Chorus and the Minnesingers. There are lots of intriguing details included in this story. For more information, contact the MV Museum at 508-627-4441 or Tom Dresser at 508-693-1050.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, the Minnesingers will hold a silent and live auction benefit. It will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at Dreamland in Oak Bluffs. The cost is $25, which includes hors d’oeuvres, chowder bar, desserts and cash bar. Tickets will be available from any MVRHS Minnesinger or at the door. For more information, call 508-939-4053. The proceeds will go to help fund the Minnesingers’ travels and trip abroad, and to the Minnesingers' scholarship fund.

It has been fun watching the derby board and reading the names of those catching the fish then looking at Facebook at those that have weighed in the fish. I guess this has been a good year for those fishing, but I heard that Tuesday night only three fish were weighed in from shore. By the time you read this, the derby will be ending Sunday and the truck and boat will be awarded to some lucky fisherman. Good luck to all.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
