Well, the weekend weather was seasonable, allowing us to make preparations for the big snow storm that was expected on Monday. It started in the morning and continued to build up strength all day and the winds began slowly to get serious. Before dark we knew we were in for a good storm even though there was a slight mix of rain. By Tuesday morning we had experienced a night with strong winds, gusts of 70 mph, blowing snow and colder temperatures. It snowed and blew all day long. All SSA boats were cancelled, schools and all municipal buildings were forced to shut down due to the weather. Those of you that had wood stoves or fireplaces kept them going to give us heat and a cooking option. Digging a path was kind of fruitless as they filled in with drifting snow before you were finished. We did not lose electricity and that was a big plus for us.

The Martha’s Vineyard Community Seed Library will hold a seed swap and germination testing workshop Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. in the community room of the library. Home gardeners are welcome to bring any open-pollinated/heirloom seed packets or saved seed to swap and share, or to donate to the new seed cabinet. You can learn how to do germination testing for seed viability, and help test all of the seed in the small but growing collection. This event is co-sponsored by Island Grown Schools, The Farm Institute, and the West Tisbury library.
Cynthia Riggs Attebery and her husband Howard of Edgartown Road extend an open invitation to everyone to attend the 27th annual Groundhog Day party at Cleaveland House on Edgartown Road from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2. Her parties are much anticipated, very interesting and a lot of fun. Please bring your favorite hors d’oeuvres to share with your friends, but she says it is not a necessary requirement to attend. There is ample off-road parking in the field that is home to her boat with a separate entrance off of New Lane. Her party is also viewed by many as the kickoff of the local political season.
History note: On Feb. 1, 1954 Stanley Eddy of Chilmark announced he had leased the former Ole Borgen/Maud Call store, which he had purchased at public auction the previous summer, to Miss Erdine Cobb of New York City. The building has had many uses over the years — store, post office, a parlor that featured famous homemade ice cream and penny candy. It was also the home of the only filling station in North Tisbury. It sold Texaco Fire Chief gasoline and consisted of only one pump. Miss Cobb planned to operate a special kind of catering service limited to providing casserole dishes, hors d’oeurves, sandwiches and canapés for cocktail parties and teas. Miss Cobb named her business the Covered Dish. The business would be open only during the peak season as Miss Cobb was otherwise employed during the winter months.
