The varsity boys’ soccer team lost to Norton High School 2-0 in the semi finals of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association south sectional tournament. Norton is the top seeded team with a record now of 18-0-1.

The Vineyard played a hard fought game keeping Norton scoreless in the first half. At that point, Norton had seven shots on goal, all of which keeper Joao Gonsalves blocked.

With 22 minutes left to play in the second half, Jordan Lach of Norton scored the first goal off a deflected shot. Jon Lach scored Norton’s second goal with 10 minutes left to play.

“We had a very good run,” said coach Esteban Aranzabe after the game. “For being a young team, we played very well together.” He called Norton a very good team and said the post season play has been a good experience for the team.

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the soccer team after losing 14 seniors to graduation last year, but it turned out to be a successful one too. The Vineyard finished the season with a record of 12-4-2, and Jason Lages once again held the state scoring record acros all divisions with 35 goals during the regular season, breaking his own record of 34 goals scored last year. This year there are only three graduating seniors. including Lages, who tweeted after the game, his last in high school: “It’s been a great three years. I represented the purple and white to the best of my ability. I can’t believe it’s over.”

The game was played in adverse weather conditions with rain and wind slicking the field.

“It was very hard to control the ball,” said Mr. Aranzabe. “But that was true for both teams.”

Coach Aranzabe said the team played their best, and never gave up.

“It’s always sad to lose, but they played very well,” said Mr. Aranzabe. “They gave everything that they had to the team.”

The field hockey team also lost a tight game, 1-0, against top seeded Cohasset in their semifinal game in the south sectional tournament. Cohasset came into the match with a 15-0-3 record. The Vineyard completed their season with a 12-4-1 record.

The team had advanced to the semifinals in dramatic fashion with Belle Dinning scoring a goal in overtime to beat Monomoy 2-1 on Sunday. They almost pulled off a major upset against Cohasset, keeping the score 0-0 until late in the second half.
