Peter Simon is stepping out from behind the lens to spin tunes at the Barn Bowl & Bistro on Friday, March 4. The event is called Peter Simon’s Bliss Out Dance Party, and it is 19 years in the making, give or take.

Each year since turning 50 years old Mr. Simon has hosted his own birthday dance party at his house, for 200 or so of his dearest friends. But a birthday in January can be a dicey thing when living down a long dirt road in Chilmark — the last three years his party was snowed out.

This year Mr. Simon decided to play it safe and celebrated his 69th birthday with a party at the Barn Bowl & Bistro, spinning tunes as he always does from numerous eras — Nothing But Flowers by the Talking Heads, Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets, Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, Eyes of the World by the Grateful Dead. Anything goes as long as it has a beat.

After the party Mr. Simon was approached by the owners of the Barn, Bowl & Bistro.

“I was worried I had done something wrong,” Mr. Simon said.

On the contrary. The owners wanted to know if he would like a regular gig, turning the upstairs event space into an all ages dance party. Mr. Simon leaped at the chance. He was the house deejay for the Hot Tin Roof when it opened in the 1970s, and had missed creating that sweaty dance hall vibe.

Friday night will be the first gig, and if demand is high it could turn into a weekly party come summer. Music plays from 8 p.m. to midnight at 13 Uncas avenue in Oak Bluffs. And best of all, it’s free.
