Well what a week it has been. Lots of sun, not too hot and the Fourth of July was perfect weather for whatever activity you had. Then we had some much needed rain. Who could ask for more?

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Maria DeFreitas who celebrated her day July 2; Matthew Gonsalves and Nicholas Penni July 3; Ella Willoughby on July 5; and Yasmim Lima and Jonathan Polleys, July 6; Parker BenDavid, Schnyeder Oliveira, Matthew Schoenberg and Maximillian Vaughn who all celebrated July 7; and to Ashley Brasefield who celebrates her day today July 8.

Special birthday wishes go out to David Garcia Mello who celebrated his 84th birthday at his house on North Summer street where he was born. David Garcia Mello was born on July 2, 1932, and attended Mrs. Mortimer’s kindergarten, then Edgartown grammar and high schools. He and his wife Lainey welcomed family and friends from on and off-Island to honor David.

Lainey mentioned that David is very fond of the Gazette and worked there for a few years. Happy birthday David and here is to many more.

I drove the town band float in the parade and I have to say that as much as I like to see all the spectators on the sides, I do miss seeing the parade. But as you drive along and see the kids jumping out for candy in the road, which is by the way very nerve-wracking for the drivers in the parade, and all the comments you hear as you drive along you find yourself giggling. Some people were asking us to throw some flowers, some were yelling that we did their garden. With every corner there was something different but most of all it was worth the smiles on all the faces.

Being a people watcher I had a blast watching all the people on the sides of the road and as we were stopped waiting for other floats to make the corner I was able to see friends I haven’t seen all summer or greet new faces. I think one of my favorite corners was on Fuller street and the kids waiting on the side of the road ready to catch their candy in fish nets. Now that is true Island spirit.

The Colonial Navy was once again in my yard this year. The nice thing this year was the neighbors were able to enjoy a concert as the drums and fifes did a quick rehearsal just before their concert at the Colonial Inn.

It looked like the fireworks were a success. I did not go downtown, but I could see the finale over the school and they seemed spectacular. I always say I will go next year but when that year comes I have already had enough, but maybe next year.

I hope you all had a nice Fourth and were able to spend some time with family and or friends.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
