Bar fights, motor vehicle accidents and dead sea life occupied Island law enforcement over the long Labor Day weekend.

Aquinnah police chief Randhi Belain said his department began receiving calls Sunday evening about a dolphin carcass washing up on shore near Philbin Beach. An officer searched the beach on Monday but did not find the dolphin, the chief said. On Tuesday, an officer and a tribal ranger located the carcass on the beach near the Gay Head Cliffs and determined it was too big to move. Chief Belain said NOAA had been notified of the animal’s remains, but did not have a responder available on the Island to investigate.

The chief said he did not know what killed the animal, and that the carcass would likely be buried on the beach.

“It’s up to us to dispose of it,” he said.

In Edgartown, police chief Bruce McNamee reported an unusually busy Labor Day weekend. Edgartown police made 10 arrests, issued four summonses and brought two individuals into protective custody, the chief said. He said of the 10 arrests, three were for drunken driving, three were disorderly person arrests and two were for larceny.

“Lieutenant [Chris] Dolby said it was the busiest Labor Day he can remember,” Chief McNamee said.

At about 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night, a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Davis Lane and Summer street sent a car careening into the fence and wall of the Vineyard Gazette building. A 28-year-old man driving an Audi failed to stop at a stop sign on Davis Lane and hit a Chevy trailblazer, then spun and collided with the historic building, according to police.

The operator of the Audi was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

It was a relatively quiet weekend in Oak Bluffs, according to police Lieut. Timothy Williamson, who said police responded to a total of 88 calls over the weekend. Early Monday morning, two arrests were made related to separate bar fights on Circuit avenue.

Chief Jonathan Klaren of Chilmark said aside from two minor accidents involving deer and a minor bike accident, his town had a quiet Labor Day Weekend as well.

Tisbury and West Tisbury police reported no weekend incidents of note.
