The turkeys must have found another restaurant to try. They did not visit for two days. I was going to ask my readers if turks go into hibernation mode but then 23 showed up for brunch and dinner yesterday. They seemed quite happy to see me. Even Hopsy was present and accounted for.

Now, I do not expect the kind of miserable miscreants who would be so cruel as to speed up a car or truck and aim it at my friends to be refined enough to be reading my column. But we had two known incidents of this in my town last week, seen and reported by two of my dear friends If you know anyone who does this or brags about it remind them that this is not only cruel and disgusting but against the law. Take down the license number or photograph the vehicle and turn them in. There are too many days in this year that I am ashamed to be a human.

Marganna Roberts just called from her home in California to say hello and how she misses us. Marganna was sad to read in my column a few weeks back that Trina Kingsbury had passed. When Marganna was a young girl starting out living in Chilmark, she met Trina and always enjoyed her time with that very talented lady. As you may recall, Marganna visited me here on Island in July, her first trip back since she moved off-Island in her teens. She definitely needs to show up here more frequently and is welcome to do so.

Stephen Dunham senior has been here visiting mom Martha. He had the pleasure of seeing his daughter, Rebecca, marry Leigh Downes last weekend at our Tisbury Waterworks location. I well remember babysitting for Rebecca and her brother, young Stephen, when they were little tykes living next door. Martha has promised me more details soon, and pictures! May they live happily ever after.

Sundays are getting exciting. Please join us at St. Augustine’s on Oct. 14 for the 28th annual Crop Walk to end hunger. Very ambitious of us, end it locally and globally. The walk honors our own energizer bunny, Betty Burton. It is also in memory of Alden Besse, my favorite person of all time. Woody Bowman is answering your questions and getting you registered at 508-693-7240 or cwbowman@earthlink.net. A percentage of the money raised will be distributed on Island for the Island Food Pantry and the Vineyard Committee on Hunger. The rest goes where it is needed worldwide. No one should be hungry. No one.

And of course our library begins its Sunday off-season hours this week. You may do your research and work on homework on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Jack Ryan’s fabulous architectural drawings have been held over at Art in the Stacks on the lower level. I am in awe of him.

So many books, so little time. I am almost done with The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis. Whenever I need to learn about a subject, baseball, stock market intrigue, political mayhem, I trust Michael Lewis to make it all interesting, understandable and amusing. I have felt that way since the first Lewis book I read, Liar’s Poker, which I dust off and reread every three years. Good writing is unforgettable.

The birthday bandwagon pulled along one-year-old Jemma Edelbach this week. She is the daughter of Lyrae Littlefield and Dan Edelbach. Oct. 9 belongs to Carrie Sampson Natusch, a great artist and loyal friend. Oct. 9 is also the birthday of our beloved John Lennon. Interestingly, his son Sean Lennon was also born on that date, on his Dad’s 35th birthday. And on Oct. 21, Lucas Rodrigues turns six and takes the cake. Many happy returns.
