In Vineyard Haven, Islanders flocked to the old Bowl & Board building to ring in the holiday season for December’s First Friday event. The front patio was transformed into a forest of Christmas trees and wreaths, sold by Tim Clark.

Cybele Benton McCormick looked on as tree purveyors secured a sizeable one on top of her Subaru.

“We have so many ornaments, we can’t have one that’s too thin,” she said. She gestured to her children Hannah, Miles and Olivia. “They’ve been picking out a tree here every year since they were born,” she said.

Inside, the children’s rock band, the Pinkletinks, launched into an energetic rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas, sending Billy Confalone, 4, and Hazel Myers, 4, into a dancing frenzy.

“They’re pretty much groupies,” said Billy’s mother Rosemary Confalone. She said the Pinkletinks were the main draw, but, “We drank a lot of cocoa, and we might peruse the gifts.”

Knitting expert Debby Ware sold hats, scarves and booties alongside hand-knitted colorful Christmas stockings.

“They’re wacko, they’re fun to do,” she said. “Glitter, give me glitter any day.”

Nearby, regional high school seniors Blake Leasure and Astoria Hall were asking for donations for the social and global change club which is learning about homelessness through the CityReach program.

“We’re raising money for a trip off-Island to help the homeless citizens in Boston,” Blake said. “We have to raise about $500 more.”

A woman wearing a knitted sweater decorated with Christmas trees thanked the students as she put some money in the jar. Her christmas ornament earrings sparkled as she walked away.
