Island police investigated more deer hunting incidents and managed large holiday crowds over the weekend.

In West Tisbury, Chief Matt Mincone said police were investigating the discovery of a bullet in a house on Middle Point Road on Saturday. Mr. Mincone said the projectile was about the size of a dime and appeared to be from a 50-caliber black powder gun. It was found in a bedroom when the residents returned from Christmas in Edgartown Saturday afternoon. A hole in the wall where the bullet entered the house is about four feet up from the ground.

Mr. Mincone said the residents gave permission to certain hunters to harvest in the area when they were not there, but those hunters were not present Saturday. He said police are still investigating the incident. Environmental police will join the investigation this week.

“It’s a unique spot to be,” Mr. Mincone said of the location of the house. “It’s kind of private.”

Primitive firearms season for deer hunting began Monday Dec. 10 and continues through Dec. 31.

Police in Aquinnah and Chilmark also responded to hunting complaints over the weekend, but found no violations.

In Oak Bluffs, Sgt. Michael Marchand reported a busy Thursday, with an early morning OUI, a truck cited for spilling garbage on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road at 10 a.m. in the morning, a deer-related accident mid-day, and then a brief police chase after an operator refused to stop after caught speeding at night.

Early Sunday morning, Oak Bluffs police brought a person into protective custody on Circuit avenue and responded to a deer-related car accident at about noon.

In Edgartown, police chief Bruce McNamee reported an eventful but safe weekend with holiday festivities in full swing.

“It was a busy weekend with the parade and the road race. There were a lot of people in town, and not a lot of incidents that came with it,” the chief said.

Tisbury police did not immediately respond to an inquiry about weekend incidents.
