The Steamship Authority is used to carrying precious cargo. But the 2018 Red Sox World Series trophy is a whole different ball game.

This Wednesday, the 30-pound, 30-flag sterling silver Commissioner’s Trophy will come to the Vineyard for a public viewing from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School cafeteria, according to Vineyard businessman Mike Santoro.

Although no Red Sox players will be present, avid Sox fans can take photos with one of the most coveted pieces of paraphernalia in sports. They’ll just have to smile through the 24-carat sheen.

Mr. Santoro said the opportunity to bring the trophy to the Vineyard arose because Dave Brady, who is the head of security at Fenway Park, owns a home in Edgartown and saw there was an opening on the trophy’s schedule. He contacted Mr. Santoro and Don Gregory, another Oak Bluffs businessman, and the pair organized an Island tour for the two-foot-tall championship jewelry.

Other stops on the impromptu Vineyard World Series parade include the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Island elementary schools, Mr. Santoro said.

The last time a World Series trophy came to the Island was 2005 (notwithstanding the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 2013 and 2018 Future’s Collegiate Baseball League world series championships).

And with the Boston Bruins sweeping their way into the Stanley Cup Finals, possibly the first championship trophy coming to the Vineyard in 2019 also isn’t the last.

The MLB makes a new World Series trophy every year. There’s only one Stanley Cup.

That would be some precious cargo.
