An early morning accident at the Steamship Authority terminal in Vineyard Haven sent two people to the hospital and damaged two trucks, public safety officials confirmed.

At about 5:20 a.m. the operator of a Ford F 350 diesel truck lost control of the vehicle and it careened from the cars staging area north across the lot. According to a preliminary police report, the side mirror of the vehicle struck a pedestrian and the truck accelerated before colliding with a Cottle’s tractor trailer, Tisbury Sgt. Christopher Habekost told the Gazette.

The operator of the vehicle and the pedestrian were both transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fire chief John Schilling said the truck came to rest wedged beneath the Cottle’s trailer. He said collision of the two vehicles released a significant amount of car fluids.

“We dammed that off because there’s a storm drain right there,” he said.

Chief Schilling added that the drivers of the Cottle’s truck were standing in front of their vehicle and had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

Sergeant Habekost said the accident is still under investigation, and no one has been charged.

Tisbury police, fire and EMS all responded. Oak Bluffs EMS also responded.
