Martha’s Vineyard was lashed with wind and rain overnight from Hurricane Dorian. The storm passed about 147 miles south of the Island early Saturday.

After a blustery night and early morning, ferries were running again by midday. The Oak Bluffs terminal remained closed, with all ferry service running in and out of Vineyard Haven.

Dorian battered the Bahamas early in the week with catastrophic category five winds, leaving devastation in its wake. The hurricane crossed the Outer Banks of North Carolina Friday as a category one storm.

Vineyard emergency managers were in preparation mode for much of the week, and Dorian gave weather-watchers a lot to talk about as they watched the sky on Friday. But the main event took place in darkness and was largely over by dawn, its aftermath no worse than any other autumn northeaster.

Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod were all under tropical storm warnings Friday, as the oncoming storm kicked up surf and brought wind and rain. Mariners were advised to find safe harbors until the storm has passed.

Edgartown started cleaning up early Saturday, with crews removing fallen tree limbs while the town’s Elgin Pelican road sweeper scrubbed its way along neighborhood streets lined with wet leaves and twigs.

At South Beach, a boy with wind-tossed hair tugged again and again at the locked passenger door of an SUV parked near the sand, where a group of people launched kites into the gusty air. Their red dragon kite swooped perilously close to the dunes before losing its grip on the sky, as a yellow delta kite continued to tug at its line.

The Farm Institute in Katama canceled its outdoor programming Saturday morning, but went ahead with a jelly-making class that included picking beach plums from shrubs growing near the institute kitchen — until a leftover rain shower cut the harvest short. Kitchen staff had gathered most of the fruit for the class on Friday before the storm.

The Vineyard Triathlon scheduled for Saturday was cancelled. Other weekend events were planned to go on as usual.

The high school cross country invitational meet has been rescheduled for next weekend.
